i went to u2 at the last minute the other night. stepped off trax, found a scalper from the jazz games, walked right in, apparently my section was entirely obstructed by the giant stage so they had a table there where they would give you a ticket for a different section, since it was just me they gave me the one awesome ticket they had left, walked right in and sat right down as U2 was coming out. for the record, this means i completely missed the fray and had absolutely nothing to do with them and neither saw nor heard them and for all i know they were never even there. because we all know i would never be caught dead listening to the fray.

and now that i've offended you, let me make it up to you with pictures!

this is U2. they bring their own gigantic stage, complete with jumbotron.

a jumbotron somehow a thousand times awesomer than the one at the basketball arena downtown.

oh that's not enough you say? they bought the deluxe edition that expands like a giant net.

yeah this is just getting ridiculous now.

oh and the music was good too. i told a girl a few years ago that U2 was the one giant excessive stadium rock concert i would like to go to. i think she was dismayed and it dropped me down a notch or 2 or 3 in her book, i guess she's more indie than me. but i liked it, they played for a couple hours, it felt like 20 minutes. 4th best concert i've ever been to this spring.

went to the college rugby national championship game. byu vs cal. first time going to that soccer field off 9400 south. cal won. the cal people sitting next to me were embarassed because the refs are so afraid of the cal coach that they will never ever call anything against cal and risk facing the wrath of their coach. so cal won, again, but it was close, and if some of these byu guys could actually catch the ball they could have won it.
but i guess if they could catch the ball, they'd probably be playing football anyway.

went to new york.
saw my favorite band play their last show.

magically got a GA ticket and i was at the very front.

i ran into (literally) aziz ansari in the lobby before the show.
i later got crowd surfed on by aziz.
and at the end i saw spike jonze behind me with a camera.

so i sold my ticket to the lcd soundsystem show tonight. last show ever. except i only sold it because i got an even better seat when they released some more tickets on ticketmaster this week. technically its not a seat, its just a general admission floor ticket. pretty lucky, those things have been selling for a grand.

instead i'm in bed. much better. kinda didn't want to sign up anyway, on the last day to register i was snowboarding and thought i might have some kind of stress fracture in my ankle, (or maybe it was just my boots and bindings not getting along,) signed up anyway, thought i might not even get chosen, did get chosen, started running, sprained an ankle and missed a week, sprained another ankle and missed another 2 weeks, the sister who lived in st george with a floor for me to sleep on moved to san diego, found out i might be moving this first weekend in october anyway, the dog ate my homework, etc.

after i got back from a most triumphant arcade fire concert in berkeley, ca, i convinced my friend ken to go see them play in new york with lcd soundsystem. because it would be cool. so we were just waiting for the right time to purchase air transportation, since if you buy tickets too far in advance, its super expensive, and not far enough in advance is super expensive, and like 3 or 4 weeks before is only somewhat expensive.
but then less than a week before we were planning on pulling the trigger on the airplane tickets, the powers that be announced that the same 2 bands would be playing in my own area code, no airplane necessary. and that was that.

7/31 9:02 pm - might have to hit up some lcd soundsystem at hollywood bowl on a friday night in october

spent last week in portland for work. portland oregon. i have no photographic evidence, because even though i brought my camera along, i didn't really see anything good. kinda like cameron from ferris bueller's day off. hung out, ate some good mexican food, played some fun beach volleyball, pretended to learn stuff at work. anyhow, i'm sure it's a fine place, i've just seen better. plus maybe i'm a little bitter that their sorry excuse for a basketball team keeps trying to steal jazz players. at least i had some good hipster music to listen to on the plane.

so somehow i've had a free subscription to spin magazine for like 6 months. it sucks. i thought it might not, but it does. every month, i almost throw it away with the rest of the junk mail. but i dont. i just have to open it up and start counting. because i started to notice that every album they review gets (on a 1 to 10 scale) between 6 and 8. so i open it up, just to see if anything has changed. it never does.
this month: 44 album reviews (reissues dont count.) 41 are between 6 and 8. 1 got a 9, 2 got 5. i just dont even get the point of that, but whatever.

i'd like to see some record reviews that are about the actual black vinyl record, and not the general collection of songs "record." like this week, i got a couple new records. first was the new lcd soundsystem record. its actually 2 records, really fancy packaging, and 180 gram heavyweight vinyl. and the songs are even good too. hadn't been able to find the vinyl double LP of it anywhere even though the album was out, even on the internet. except like germany and denmark. but then finally there it was at randy's records.

preordered the new health remix LP a long time ago. almost forgot it was coming. tuesday it did. 2 records, a little flimsier than the lcd soundsystem records, but not flimsy enough to get warped. kind of middle of the road flimsy. sounds good though, good songs. comes with a download of a second batch of remixes. or if you get it at slowtrain, they just give you a cd of it because they know you cant always trust the internet to work.

here's one i like from the extra bonus cd, couldnt even find it on hype machine, thats how far ahead of the hipster curve i am.

and another thing. i like records. i don't buy compact discs. no use for them. all i do is stick it in my computer and turn it into mp3s and take them with me. records are more fun though. harder to put on repeat than a cd, because the repeat button is actually just yourself, getting up and moving the needle back a little. and records are bigger, so the picture on the cover is huge like a large-print book for someone's grandma. pretty much anything that comes out on cd these days comes out on vinyl too, and lots of the records come with a code inside to download the mp3s anyway.

some people say records sound better, i'm not exactly convinced but i'll go with it. i'm not sure how the actual sound gets put on a record and gets taken off by the needle on a turntable, it has been explained to me but i'm not a rocket surgeon. i'd rather just believe that it's magical than actually understand how it works.

so tomorrow is record store day. lots of special records come out that you can only get at real record stores. there's lots and lots that i would like to get. but slowtrain and graywhale and all these stores around here would rather bring in a special owl city record than any of the ones i want. you probably think i'm joking. who would buy that? yeah, probably him. don't know why i'm surprised, shopping for records at slowtrain is like digging through the garbage anyway.

landed back in salt lake, it was a winter storm warning. even though technically it's spring. snowbird got so much snow that tuesday the road up there was closed and all the lifts were closed. and it kept snowing and snowing, and then wednesday morning all the clouds were gone and the road was plowed and the sun was out and there was 45 inches of new snow that nobody had touched. NOT BAD. this is what it looked like.

wouldn't be a day at snowbird without getting cliffed out above a 40 foot drop, but i'm getting good at hiking back out.
and now i'm ready for summertime.

went to california over the weekend. orange county to be exact. let me tell you what the best friday ever sounds like. woke up early, drove to big bear, snowboarded at bear mtn. definitely not utah. lost my gloves the second time up the lift but the weather was so nice it didn't even matter.

went from bear mtn to downtown LA with a stop at a restaurant called islands. so so so good.

went from islands to the staples center. watched the lakers play utah. hid the fact that i was wearing a deron williams jersey until i was safely seated next to some rich people who probably wouldn't pull a knife on me. didn't really go so good for the jazz, but it was still amazing.

saturday included frozen bananas and feeding churros to strange cats and newport harbor and watching the non-existent waves at the wedge.

sunday at the airport i got to ride out my first earthquake, it was wild. really completes the california experience.

now i'm back to reality and winter storm warnings in utah and it kinda makes it feel like it was just a dream.

i like shoes. everybody does. not exactly breaking news. it became clear to me walking around manhattan last fall that i needed comfier shoes like everyone else. luckily for me new york city has every kind of shoe a person could want. especially for someone with an infant-like fascination with bright colors. so this is what i got. its a mashup of a few different shoes.

while we're on shoes, i saw that these air jordans that i got 10 years ago got re-released. the air jordan 11 space jams. i guess i have good taste because they are the most sought after of all the jordans. luckily if you missed them in december in the 20 minutes before they sold out, or you missed them in 2000, you can still get them. if you are allergic to money.

went to musclehawk, it was so awesome that i'm probably gonna have to go again this friday.
these are my main snowboards right now, we've been spending alot of time together. i was going to get them a valentines day card or a box of chocolates or something, but the nice thing about these snowboards is that i don't have to.
among their other technologically advanced features is that when you show up at the bar musclehawk is playing at and they say the show is changed from 8pm to 11pm and you go kill some time at a restaurant, the snowboards dont pull out their cell phones spend the next 3 hours texting. they dont have to fake laugh at the jokes i make or ask me if their eyelashes look alright.
my snowboards have never asked me at the restaurant if their friend kelly who is in town for the weekend can come meet up with us at the concert, and forget to mention that not only is kelly a dude, but an ex boyfriend. at least he didn't show up until the band i wanted to see was done. so thats when i left, it was pretty awesome. at least none of my friends were there to see it all. oh wait, they were, how embarassing.
so if you are one of the 20 people who goes to see musclehawk this friday and you see me standing in the back with my snowboard, now you know why.

let be honest. i like music. you like music. but i don't like music that is made by someone from the same city, county, or state as me, because i live in salt lake, not new york or paris or stockholm.
but a friend of mine (not from here) likes this band that actually is from here. weird, i know. they are called muscle hawk and they are playing a show tonight (i found this out in line for the tram today) and most of their stuff sounds like a cheap justice ripoff, but lets be honest, a cheap justice ripoff is alot better than 4 u of u dropouts who suck at guitar. which i'm pretty sure is what everything else in this town is.

i like snowboarding. this should be obvious by now. i've always wanted to go to whistler, BC. aka where the olympics are right now. funny though, that the weather there right now pretty much sucks. slush instead of snow, so ski racing is postponed, no snow at all where they are doing the ~~olympic stunt ditch~~ halfpipe. so they had to put down a bunch of hay bales and haul snow in with helicopters to put on top of it.
and then you have utah, it wasn't even supposed to snow the last couple of days, but it did, and i spent thursday, friday, and all day today laying down knee deep fresh tracks off the tram.
the grass may be greener on the other side, but the snow is whiter right here.

went to new york at the end of september, came back and one of my roommates had disappeared.
went to new york at the beginning of november, and the other one started to pack up.
then i left for thanksgiving and when i came back, he was gone.
turns out the couch was the first guy's and the kitchen table and the tv were the second guy's, so it's empty like a ghost town.
i hardly ever even saw the other guys anyway but it's still weird to have the place to myself.
i guess instead of the last guy always turning up the heat and me always turning it down, it will just stay cool.

i was sitting there trying to do the calculations regarding euros and shipping from different european countries (because they were giving me record prices in us dollars but shipping in euros) when i found a website that shows the stock of a ton of domestic and international record stores.
so i just got it from a record store in minnesota and skipped the whole euro thing.
needless to say, when it showed up today, i was glad that i didn't have to wait for it to clear customs in italy.

i don't really like college football, because lately it's too political.
i don't really like pro football either, because well it's football. it's just not my thing.
i did have a good time at the nfl game i went to last week, however, thanks in large part to the 60,000 people in the crowd that were one or two coors lights away from losing control of their bodily functions. they really get into it.
unlike belmont chicks in pink shirts who sit there at the stadium and text message all afternoon oblivious that there is a byu football game going on. my apologies if that describes you.

woke up at my hotel the next day with almost enough time to take the subway to a day game at yankee stadium. i was a little late but they didn't start the game until i got there, thanks to the rain falling from the sky all morning. when i saw that phoenix (the french band) was playing in new york and that the yankees were playing the red sox that same weekend, i decided that trip had my name written all over it.

boston vs new york is one of the biggest rivalries in sports, and even though i realized a few years ago that nba basketball was way more fast-paced and exciting to me than baseball, red sox vs yankees has been on my list of things to do before i die. along with sitting courtside at a jazz game. (i probably should start adding to my list so that i live past 28.)

i had some awesome and hard-to-get seats on top of the batter's eye at the brand new yankee stadium. you may notice a black area in centerfield where there are no seats, so that the batter can see the baseball when the pitcher throws it. in yankee stadium, there hitting backdrop is actually a sports bar in centerfield. you have to have a ticket to the game and another ticket to the sports bar. inside, there are people watching the game. but outside, all you see is black glass.

it stopped raining after a couple innings, and it turned into a great day to watch baseball. the yankees ended up coming from behind at the end of the game to beat boston. i used to not mind boston when they hadn't won a world series for 90 years, but then they did win, and i realized that drunken bostonians annoy me like few people can and i hope they don't win another world series for another 90 years. my team is the mets, and whoever is playing against atlanta, philadelphia, st louis, and boston.

so what if this was like 3 weeks ago

i had a red eye to catch to new york on a friday night. had a concert to go to at 6 on saturday in central park. except delta sort of screwed me out of my seat on that flight. luckily i ended up leaving first thing saturday morning. (jim gaffigan was on my flight and i learned that hygiene is not a prerequisite for success.) and luckily the honorable dan whitmore, my tour guide and public relations manager for the weekend, works at mtv right in the middle of times square, and let me stash my bags in his office on the way to the show. and off we went.

the concert was outdoors in central park. so many hipsters. at the entrance there were so many people trying to buy tickets. (it's a weird thought, but it kind of made me think about scalping tickets at the gates of heaven.) probably could have made quite a chunk of change, but i pretty much went all the way to new york just to go to the show.

passion pit was first, and i didn't know a whole lot about them except that people either love them or hate them. they had one song that i liked, but the other couple of songs i had heard didn't really do it for me. live, however, was another story. every song was awesome. you may or may not know by now, but i have a giant weakness for synthesizers. the way to a man's heart is food, but the way to mine is food and/or synthesizers.

phoenix was ok too. i'll just leave it at that because i don't want to rub it in. 1901 was the last song of the night and the crowd went crazy. i got that song from megan stratton and i've been listening to it non stop ever since. it had just barely started to just barely rain and the raindrops were falling extra slow like snowflakes. it was borderline magical. and worth the whole trip.

baseball is ok

went to new york. took a couple thousand pictures. literally. haven't uploaded the recap yet but i did like this picture. second yankees game i went to, vs the royals, sat on the front row in left field. you would think, with all the steroids in baseball, that somebody could have at least hit a ball in my direction, but no. maybe next time.
